Taking Off… When You’re Ready

I’ve spent a lot of time in airports over the years.

When you travel as much as I do, you start noticing things most people overlook. One lesson has stayed with me. Airplanes rarely have perfect conditions for takeoff. There might be turbulence ahead. Weather shifts. Winds change. Delays happen. Yet at some point, the pilot lines up on the runway and moves forward anyway.  Life works much the same way.

Whether you’re building a business, changing careers, learning a new skill or stepping into something that feels bigger than you, there’s always a reason to wait.

We tell ourselves we’ll start when we have more experience, more confidence, more money or simply more time.

The trouble is that perfect conditions rarely show up.

When I look back on my own career, the biggest opportunities all came wrapped in uncertainty. The promotions I said yes to, the businesses I started, the stages I stepped onto, the technologies I leaned into. Every one of them carried some risk. If I’d waited until I felt completely ready, most of them would have passed me right by.

I’ve also learned that confidence is the result of action, not something you need before you start. People assume successful folks move forward because they feel certain. The truth is, most of us move forward even when we’re not. We take the next step, learn as we go, adjust when we need to and find out we’re more capable than we thought.

Flying reminds me of this, too. From the runway, the destination feels impossibly far. You can’t see the whole journey. But once the plane lifts off, your perspective changes. What seemed distant starts to feel reachable. The obstacles that looked huge get smaller as you climb.

Dreams and goals work the same way. Progress creates perspective.

Growth rarely happens while we’re standing still. It happens when we’re willing to move before everything feels certain, when we trust the process and when we’re brave enough to begin.

So if you’ve been waiting for the “right” time to start something that matters, let this be your reminder. The perfect moment may never come.

Sometimes the next step is all you need. The runway is already in front of you. The question is, are you ready to take off?
